Goals: Physical and Mental for 2018

Posted on January 8, 2018November 24, 2018 by Jenna

Goals: I have a lot of them.

I want to start showing up. Every other Monday, I will be here, pouring my heart out and working toward my health and fitness goals. I hope you will come back and join me each time. It always helps to have others to hold you accountable for your actions. You do that for me, as long as I keep showing up here.

goalsMy word of the year? Consistency.

In 2018 my focus is on overall health, physical AND mental. I want to feel good inside and out. I want to decrease my anxiety and depression. I want to find joy in the everyday. I want to decrease stress. I have a plan to slowly add in daily meditation, journaling, and reading. These three activities center me and help me decompress. I am starting out with 1-2 days per week and when that becomes habit increase it slowly until it’s a daily thing. The hardest part for me is finding the 15 minutes to meditate. I work all day and then come home. It’s easier after work when no one else is home but that is a rare occurrence. And then I sometimes doze off while meditating later in the evening. It’s a work in progress.

For journaling, I can easily do that most nights. I just don’t. I have journals and pens, just gotta do it! Same with reading. I usually read on my commute and lunch break, I just need to be more consistent with these times. I want to read a book a week this year. I’ve devised a plan of attack and week one went great. I figured out I needed to read 55 pages for 7 days to finish my book. It was easier to sit down and read knowing I *only* had to read 55 pages. Most days I read more and the last two days I had about 30 pages each day. I also listed out all the books I plan to read this year so I know which one is coming next and when I finish one I can move right on to the next!

I am also focusing on logging my food and hitting my calories and macros. For now, I am working on just logging. I log everything I eat. If I have a great day, I can hit my calorie goal. If I have a bad day, I log and go over but at least I am logging. I am holding myself responsible for my choices, both good and bad. Meal planning and healthy recipes are also a focus. I am trying to find easy, quick recipes with similar ingredients to make it easy to do and stick with.

Finally, the physical. I want to be consistent with all my workouts. I want to be a runner again. I want to gain strength. I want to push myself to workout when I’d rather sit on the couch. It’s so much easier to sit on the couch and listen to that voice in my head than it is to workout. I have signed up for a few short races to help push myself in running and another challenge to help me reach my strength goals.

Part of me is afraid to run more than 3 miles. If I push myself in distances will I have the same reaction I did early in 2017, which caused me to stop running altogether? I’ve had it a few times over winter, but not every run. I plan to discuss this with my physician at my annual appointment. I think it might be blood pressure related, high or low. I test high at the doctor and normal at home but the symptoms read like low blood pressure drops. It could be related to poor nutrition and going out too fast/hard. I need to figure it out though because I get anxiety when a new distance comes up on a training plan and then find out reasons not to go.

I still have plans to get the runs on (not) gluten page up and running, in the meantime go join the Facebook group as it is slowly becoming the place to be!

What are your goals for 2018 and how will you be consistent? What is your word of the year?

How does landscape photography come to life?

Posted on November 27, 2017 by Jenna

Landscape photography – how does one decide what to create?

landscape photographyHave you ever wondered how the mind of an artist works? Why did they decide on that subject and those colors? How about a little peek into my creative process?

My main passion is landscape photography. I spend my days observing the world around me and even when I don’t have my camera I am thinking about the image I could make. I especially love watching the sky change color on my morning bus ride. The light the earth and sun produce amazes me and observing helps me become a better photographer.

Creating an image takes a lot of time and patience. It starts with picking a location. For me, this is usually where I am traveling to. I spend sometime before I leave deciding what I want to see. I look for interesting places and I try to find someplace unique, that not a lot of people may photograph.

Once I get to my selected location, I look around a bit. I also move around looking for the best angle and if there are other people there how I can leave them out of my shot. It’s much easier to leave them out then take them out in Photoshop. I also imagine the scene if I got it from a different angle, can I stand on a rock or bench? What if I crouch down? I also take note of where the sun and shade are, where can I get the best light?

Then I take several photos.

But not too many.

I take at least 2 or 3 of each position and I try to get 2 or 3 different locations so I end up with four to nine images of each location. I like to have options. I used to take way more but I try to be as efficient as possible because going through 400 images after a trip can be time-consuming.

I used to shoot film. It’s what I learned on back in the dark ages. When I got back into photography and bought a DSLR, I went nuts. I can take as many photos as I want! I am not limited to 24 or 36! And if they don’t turn out? Who cares! But then I ended up with 100s and 1000s of images. Most of them mediocre because I wasn’t shooting as intentionally as I used to with film. My biggest piece of advice for budding photographers?

Shoot with intention. And patience.

Honestly, I pretend I am still shooting film and I put some thought behind what I capture. Landscape photography allows for you to be patient. The mountains aren’t going to run away like kids or wildlife will do. The elements are fairly stable and give you the time to really think, look, listen, and feel for your image to appear.

Once home, I move all images from my laptop to my desktop and import them into Lightroom. I have tried Bridge but I much prefer Lightroom for organizing and editing my images. I recommend it but if you find something that fits your vision better, go for it! I do a quick once through and delete any images that are just not right. Sometimes I accidentally take a photo while putting my camera away or I missed my focus on one. Not every photo is a winner!

Once I have what I feel are the best images, I look through them a few times before I start editing. I want to get a feel for the images. To me, RAW files are like a mound of clay. I get to mold and sculpt a beautiful landscape from it! I am a huge film nerd and use mostly Mastin Lab presets as a starting point. I have all of them so I select the one that looks right for the scene and start making my personal adjustments. Right now, I tend to adjust the shadows because I love bringing out the blacks.

As far as black and white images, I shoot some images with a conversion in mind. Black and white film was what I first learned on and hope to someday go to all black and white, a la Ansel Adams. So I look for some images that would make good monochromatic images. Others I see in post and I do a test as black and white. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Once I have everything edited, I go through and rank them either 1, 3 or 5 stars. 1 is images that I will use to share with my friends and family as my vacation photos. 3 stars are I might use, I might not. And 5 stars? Those are the cream of the crop. The final products and what you see in my shop!

Once they are rated, I register all the images I use for my shop with the Copyright office. Once I register I post them for you to purchase!

Some artists like to share their images with others and get opinions/constructive criticism on their images. Others like to go it alone and use their own discretion to pick and improve. It’s really a personal preference. I tend to go alone unless I need a second opinion. I have a few trusted friends and artists that I will ask versus the general public or a Facebook group. With art, it is very subjective and some people aren’t as good at constructive critiscm as they are criticism.

To find your process, find your inspiration and passion. Start shooting, editing, and trying different things. I didn’t know what I was doing when I first started but over time I have found what I love and how I love to bring images to life. It is an ever-evolving concept. Your style will change as you learn and grow.

Recycling – The Top Five Tips

Posted on November 13, 2017 by Jenna

Recycling is probably the most popular R in the reduce, reuse, recycle mantra.

recyclingEveryone probably knows recycling is important and all the tips that go along with it but it’s still an important topic. Maybe some of us just need a little reminder now and then. The other Rs will not be covered here but will be covered in a future post, as all are important.

Did you know:

  • Recycling reduces waste, pollution, and energy
  • Conserves natural resources
  • Keeps approximately 60 million tons of waste from landfills
  • For every 1,000 tons creates 1.57 jobs, $76,000 in wages, and $14,100 in tax revenue

Top Five Recycling Tips

  1. First, check what is and isn’t recyclable for your city. Your city should have guidelines online like Phoenix does.
  2. Twist bottle caps back on before tossing in the bin.
  3. Take plastic bags to stores with recycling bins out front (many grocery stores have these). Find a location near you.
  4. Out and about? Keep a reusable tote in your car to toss your recycling in and take it home.
  5. Look for and purchase products made from recycled materials.

Start small but start now. It doesn’t matter what you haven’t done yet. You can still make an impact by starting now. As with anything, start with what you can do and build on it.

Confession

Posted on August 9, 2017November 23, 2021 by Jenna

165.8.

My current weight. I am putting it out there for all to see. I am not where I’d like to be. I gained 25 pounds since my celiac diagnosis. First, I was in denial. It was only 10 pounds. I’ll lose it easily. But it just kept coming. Then came anger. How the fuck did I gain all this weight? Fuck celiac disease. Yes, I kept blaming my celiac disease. Going gluten free can cause weight gain but I think mine was probably just the first 10-15 pounds. I put on those pounds pretty quickly after going gluten free. The other 10 pounds? I slowly packed those on.

I was depressed about having celiac and going gluten free. So I ate. I ate crappy gluten free baked goods because I could. I ate entire packages of Glutino cookies because they were better than my beloved Oreos.

But I think I have finally reached acceptance.

self confidence
Probably one of the last times I felt happy & confident in myself.

I know I gained the weight and I’m not happy with it. I know only I can change it. So I started. In July I focused on eating healthy. The past week or so I have been tracking my food. I redid my calorie and macro calculations and am working to hit those goals. Anyone know how I can reduce the number of carbs? I eat WAY too many carbs for being gluten free!

I am slowly trying to get active again. I am working towards my 10K steps per day and 10 plus minutes of stretching. I am slowly adding running back in. And by the end of August, I hope to start lifting weights again. I was feeling so much stress earlier this summer. Work was crazy. Running my own business on top of work and then trying to fit in workouts was making me crazy.

So I stopped.

Often we neglect our mental health, but it is just as important as our physical health. We need to make sure our mind is healthy. My anxiety was getting crazy high. I was starting into a downward spiral of depression. So I stepped back. I thought, what can I drop and/or refocus on? For me, it was working out and eating better. I couldn’t skip my job. We kinda need the money. I don’t want to give up my business. I am still trying to grow it to where I want it to be. So I stopped my workouts. I still took daily walks. I started making better food choices.

I started small and am building towards where I want to be.

What else happened when I gained all this weight? I lost my self-confidence. I want that back. I want to feel confident in everything I do. I want to feel good in my clothes. Right now all my clothes feel too tight or don’t sit well. Plus, I am wearing the same few pieces all the time. They are easy. I know they fit somewhat ok. It’s time to start utilizing everything in my closet. I want to wear skirts and heels. I want to put on makeup and feel pretty again.

I truly believe that sometimes you need to fake it until you make it. I know if I start dressing like I feel pretty or sexy, I will actually start feeling pretty and sexy again. My plan is to get in the shower just 5 minutes earlier. Five minutes should give me enough time to pick out a different outfit and put on some eye shadow and mascara. I can put on lipstick at work after I eat my breakfast.

How do you boost your self-confidence when you aren’t feeling 100%?

World Elephant Day

Posted on August 8, 2017 by Jenna

Elephant: a symbol of wisdom and strength.

elephantAugust 12th is World Elephant Day. Their numbers are dropping and are in danger of becoming extinct.

The biggest threat is poachers, after their tusks, meat, and other body parts. Habitat loss and humans are the other largest dangers to elephants.

They are amazing creatures. They mourn the loss of loved ones, much like humans. Elephants love to communicate through touch. They love to swim, using their trunk as a snorkel. Females are pregnant for 22 months. Can you even imagine?!? Babies are born blind.

Can you imagine a world without these beautiful creatures? Your grandchildren and great grandchildren should have the joy of seeing elephants still roaming the earth. If we don’t stop the poachers, this just might be the case.

How can you help? Don’t buy anything ivory. Tell others to never buy ivory. Donate. Join the herd.

If you are in Arizona, you can attend the event at the Reid Park Zoo (where I took the elephant photos in this post – Learn more about them here).

Nature’s great masterpiece, an elephant; the only harmless great thing. John Donne

Can we just be better and stop killing off animals?

June and July Wrap Up

Posted on July 26, 2017July 24, 2017 by Jenna

July is coming to an end. How have I done the last few months?

Not that great.

I have given up on working out. I was being so sporadic I didn’t feel it was worth it. I did better in June than July but I can’t get my head in order. My 9-5 has been crazy this month and despite having good intentions every morning I am dead by the time I get home. My head is spinning and all I want to do is zone out and relax. I have been giving myself permission to do so. I think it is important for my mental health to just have some downtime.

I have been focusing on eating better. And I would say 90% of the time I have been doing pretty well. I am eating fruits and vegetables and filling up on protein. I am limiting my sweets and doing really well in this category. July has seen me eating a lot of potato chips and pretzels. I apparently am heading towards a salty binge. Week days are so much better than weekends because I tend to graze when I’m writing or editing photos.

I am giving myself permission to take time and get one area of my life somewhat controlled before I add another element. For July I really focused on my food and will continue to do so through August. My plan is to reintroduce workouts in September. I want to try running again plus restart the Bikini Body strength program. It’s a 6-day program but I plan to start slow and do just Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and the weekends. I will rest on Tuesday and Thursday. Once I feel comfortable with that, I will add in one more day to do the program as written.

I think mental health is just as important as physical health. Stepping away from exercise is both bad and good for mental health. I know I feel better when I workout but right now working out is causing me to stress more. I am still taking walk breaks every day, just not doing strength or cardio workouts. I would love to but I need to get my mental health in order.

I have not journaled much in June and not at all in July. I plan to start adding that back in during August. I will start off with once a week and build from there. I also want to start reading before bed again. I have a stack of magazines that are calling my name but I have picked surfing Facebook or playing Candy Crush instead. As much as I enjoy mindlessly playing around on Facebook, I need to use my time better.

It’s been a rough summer but everything gets better eventually, right?

How do you keep yourself motivated? What do you do for mental health? Tell me in the comments!

International Tiger Day

Posted on July 25, 2017 by Jenna

July 29th is International Tiger Day.

Ever since I can remember I have loved tigers, especially white ones. I have always thought they were beautiful animals. I remember being worried about the future of tigers from a young age. I vividly remember learning about the dodo and thinking how awful it was that we have killed off species and now no one else will ever be able to enjoy them. I didn’t want that to happen to any other animals. I guess you can say I took up the cause as a child and haven’t looked back.

[ngg_images source=”galleries” container_ids=”6″ display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_basic_imagebrowser” ajax_pagination=”0″ ngg_triggers_display=”never” is_ecommerce_enabled=”0″ order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]

Tigers habitats have been reduced to just 7% of their original range. Three species of tigers are extinct and the remaining six species are in danger of becoming extinct as well. There are only an estimated 3,000 left in the wild. We need to do more to help this species survive. The biggest threat is poaching and illegal wildlife trade, which seems to be the demise of many creatures. Human development has caused habitat loss and has forced tigers to stalk and kill livestock. Farmers then retaliate against them by capturing and killing. You take away the animals environment and food sources and you expect them to what? Not eat? Humans can be the worst. Lastly, climate change is causing sea level to rise which takes away, even more, habitats for these great creatures.

How can you help tigers?

  • Tell Congress to renew the postal stamp
  •  Sponsor a tiger
  • Donate to WWF

My birthday is in August and I would love for you to donate as a gift to me. I will also be donating to the Tigers for the month of August with my Give Back program. I am seriously passionate about this cause and will match any business donations with my own personal donation. Double the donations! Please, peruse the shop and consider a purchase in August. I will also have all new galleries up with a lot of options for everyone!

How will you help save the tigers from extinction? Tell me in the comments.

Fourth of July

Posted on June 27, 2017November 23, 2021 by Jenna

The Fourth of July is almost here.

fourth of july

I am a little sad that I won’t be in Wisconsin this year and running the Firecracker Four Mile. I’ve run it the last two years with my dad. And Phoenix will never have such a thing because it is just too damn hot. So, what am I doing instead? Most likely sitting around my house in the patriotic tank top I bought to mark the occasion.

J will be working so unless my BFF can hang out, it will be me and the dogs. I will celebrate with a workout, followed by some Justified or Twin Peaks binging (Yes, I just started watching the original Twin Peaks. I am a bit behind). I want to make something on the grill for dinner and a fancy cocktail. I am really into fancy cocktails and want to try my hand at making different ones. So I am thinking watermelon mimosas for breakfast and slushies to keep cool during the day. Oh, and I found these. Yes, please!

What are your plans for the Fourth of July?

I spent the weekend at the gluten free expo in Glendale.

I love having a place to go where I don’t have to think about what I’m eating. Everything was gluten free. I was talking with a few other bloggers before the expo and we all agreed it was great to be amongst people that have the same issues and able to eat EVERYTHING. And I discovered I’m not the only one that hates when the gluten free menu is a salad or vegan dish.

The expo was sponsored by Glutino and Udi’s so of course, they were there. I won a $1 off coupon from them. Last year they had more full-sized products they gave away. I liked that better. LOL Enjoy Life had a huge set up as well. They had a little trail you followed and collected samples at.

Aleia’s Gluten Free Food was a small sponsor who was not there last year. They gave us bloggers a ton of full-sized samples. Their cookies have grat flavor but they are more crunchy cookies. I prefer my cookies to be soft and chewy. Now, their macaroons? To die for. They were so moist and chewy I was all, are these really gluten free?? They gave us a shake n bake type product so I can’t wait to try that. They also asked what we want in products. We all said croissants. I laughed because I had just told someone a few days earlier that I had yet to find a gluten-free croissant.

ProYo was back with their ice cream this time. I sampled the mint chocolate chip and it was amazing! I had previously bought the chocolate so I really wanted to try a new flavor. I have a thing for ProYo.

There were a lot of booths I skipped. I don’t go for home improvements, essential oils, or dairy free cheese. Last year I went to every booth and then got a lot of paper, emails, and phone calls I really didn’t want. I made myself promise to only go to booths I wanted to and was interested in this year.

On the way out they said the expo would be the same time next year. I am not 100% sure if I will attend. I love the expo but it was more enjoyable in November than June. I had to venture out in the heat, good thing I can start my car from an app! I bet when it gets closer to time to apply I will do it again because I know me. I can’t resist free food and new products.

If you aren’t following me on Instagram, you missed out on all the fun stuff at the expo! I posted tons of stuff on my stories. Don’t miss out and go follow me now!

What are your plans for Fourth of July?

International Yoga Day

Posted on June 21, 2017June 21, 2017 by Jenna

June 21st is international yoga day and I’m taking that as a sign.

Yoga
What happens when I try to do yoga…

I need to get back on the horse. I used to do yoga after *most* of my runs and all my long runs. I stopped running and therefore I’ve stopped doing it.

I probably need more yoga than most people because I am literally the least flexible person on earth. I’ve never been flexible, even when I was dancing five days a week. This is probably why I never became a professional dancer. I do much better and actually get a little flexible when I actually stretch daily and do yoga at least once a week.

And now with my increased emphasis on strength training, I need to do more stretching.

I am the least flexible and I am pretty sure I have the world’s rightest hips. My squats are nowhere near ass to the grass. I’m lucky if I can get parallel. I use a lit of hip openers to work on gaining flexibility in my hips to help improve my lifting.

Like most people, I sit at a desk for 8-9 hours a day. I try to get up and do posture checks but I know I need help here too. Even at home I have horrible posture. What helps posture? Yoga.

I also benefit from the mental aspect as well. I feel less stressed when I take the time for yoga. I need to learn to shut my brain down and certain poses help with that. I always feel better after a good session.

Lastly, I’d like to work on my balance. You’d think after 20ish years of dance I’d be a pro at balance. Nope. I’m only graceful and balanced while dancing. Yoga, and many of the individual poses, are great for balance work, which is helpful in real life.

I pledge to start doing yoga once a week and stretching daily. I really want to feel strong and healthy, both mentally and physically.

What do you pledge to do to be healthier?

Reading in the Book Corner

Posted on June 14, 2017June 16, 2022 by Jenna

I have a problem. I keep buying books.

readingThis is nothing new. I have loved books and reading since I was little. I have fond memories of reading Nancy Drew with my dad at bedtime. I spent hours at the public library during the summers. I can still spend hours wandering, exploring, and searching Barnes and Noble.

I can’t read reviews because it makes me want to read every book. But still, when someone recommends a book I run to Amazon, read the description, the reviews and add it to one of my wishlists. Yes, you read that right, I have multiple wishlists. I have so many books I had to organize several lists.

So, yes, I have a problem.

I currently own 262 books I haven’t read. They are a mix of Kindle books and physical books. I will buy whichever version is cheaper for most books. There are a few I like to have physical copies of. I am currently reading four books, a self-help book, a photography book, a fiction book, and a history book. I’ve only been able to finish 16 books so far in 2017. My goal is 45. I am three books behind schedule, only 36% completed. I hope to catch up on a few trips we have this summer/fall and I usually take some time over Christmas and spend a little time reading.

I wish I had more time to read.

I try to read at least 15-20 minutes a day. Sometimes I luck out and can get more, other days I don’t even have time or energy to crack a book I sneak reading in when I can. Usually on my bus commute, at lunch, and before bed.

What do I read? Basically everything.

I read a lot of photography and business books because I am trying to learn all I can and keep on top of my craft. I read some self-help books, nothing to woo. I love books about interesting people, especially musicians. I love true crime, mystery and thriller books. I love what some people call chick lit. I will read classics. I will pretty much give any book a chance. I read the awful Twilight books but I refuse to read 50 Shades of Gray. That seems to be my limit. I’ve read passages from 50 Shades and it was just awful. The writing was unreadable.

What are you reading this summer?
